CDC Travel Health Warning for Novel H1N1 Flu in Mexico Removed
This information is current as of today, May 18, 2009 at 14:51 EDT
CDC’s Travel Health Warning recommending against non-essential travel to Mexico, in effect since April 27, 2009, has now been downgraded to a Travel Health Precaution for Mexico.
Current Situation
CDC has been monitoring the ongoing outbreak of novel H1N1 flu in Mexico and, with the assistance of the Mexican authorities, has obtained a more complete picture of the outbreak. There is evidence that the Mexican outbreak is slowing down in many cities though not all. In addition, the United States and other countries are now seeing increasing numbers of cases not associated with travel to Mexico. Finally, the risk of severe disease from novel H1N1 virus infection now appears to be less than originally thought.

Flu Fears Have Not Curbed Travel Plans
The following is an article from TravelMole (a travel agent community online) that was posted today:
"Travelers are taking President Obama's advice, not Joe Biden's and are exercising prudence, not panic, in the face of the Swine Flu outbreak.
According to Global Distribution System and Online Travel Company members of the Interactive Travel Services Association, business and leisure travel continues, despite a decline to Mexico as travelers proceed with caution. Members are seeing very few cancellations outside of Mexico. Many are waiving cancellation and change fees for travel to Mexico and helping with any rebookings associated with Mexican travel, as necessitated by the Swine Flu situation.
Travelers are told to act on science, not on rumors or reports that are wildly blown out of proportion. The World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issue advisories that are up-to-the-minute and authoritative. The public should continue to rely on them as their primary sources of information on which to base travel-related decisions.
There are no advisories concerning travel to or throughout the US, to Europe, the Caribbean and a host of other destinations. Travelers can take advantage of extraordinary savings and value now for business and leisure trips in many locations outside of Mexico. By exercising caution and some common sense, and guided by the advice of WHO and CDC, travelers can still go ahead with their plans without undue concern throughout much of the world."
From our agency's standpoint, we have not had anyone cancel their trips to Mexico completely, they have just changed their travel dates. We have not had any cancellations due to the Swine Flu scare. More food for thought is that the president of our agency, Julie Miller, is still planning on taking her trip to Mexico on May 17th.
Bottom line is that we want our clients to be safe and happy with their vacation. We wouldn't send our clients somewhere that would be unsafe for them and wouldn't travel ourselves if we felt that a destination was truly unsafe.
Please let us know if you have any questions about Mexico or any other destination. You may call us toll free at (877) 887-4321 or email us at travel@unlimitedcruises.com. Thank you!
